Last Days

I keep forgetting to post here. My blog has been always neglected since I became too lazy to blog about idols ahaha.

My last week in S company was quite disastrous. My dad said that usually people have 2 types of reactions towards leaving colleagues. Either they would be very nice to you, treat you to lunch/dinner, farewell and trying to catch up with you before you leave, or they wouldn’t be afraid of getting onto the worst terms ever with you. Most of the people belonged to the first category for me, and there were 3 of them who became devils during my last few weeks.

1) This guy is in senior management position. I have been trying to push for the transfer of a job function over to his department to standardize the job functions across both centres. He refused and said that his people are too busy. My point was that he had 3 staff with that job title who handles this at the other centre. If he thought that his 3 staff can’t handle it, I don’t see why he thought that I, one person, could handle. So with the help of my ex-boss, we pushed it through (with the help of her support from the big boss).

Before the big boss helped to push the job through, there was one meeting I had to attend alone from my dept because my ex-boss was not free. I entered the meeting room on time, and a few of the upper management people were already discussing about some hygiene related issue. The moment I sat down, he turned to me and asked, “So how?” I returned him a blank-gradually-turned-puzzled look. Am I supposed to know what you guys were talking about?

Well, actually, I did know what they were talking about, but I chose to act blur because I was very pissed off that he refused to claim back the job function. But hey, do you start conversations like that, “So how?” and expect people to understand what you were talking about?

Seeing that I didn’t have an answer to his “So how?” He said, “How come recently I see you, you don’t smile anymore? Where did you sense of humour go to?” I remained silent. What do you expect me to reply?

His next sentence was the last straw. “Or you don’t know what is sense of humour because you don’t have.” It wasn’t a question. It was more like a statement. In front of everyone in the meeting room.

He’s a VP. And he talks like this.

2) About a week before my last day, I received an email after lunch time from the production manager that a machine in the kitchen wasn’t cleaned properly by the cleaners. I have told them a million times before that that they don’t have to come to me, they could inform the cleaners directly. But since it was repeat case from that very morning, I replied him asking for the exact time it was observed, so I could feedback and impose fines if necessary.

The head chef replied my email within 2 minutes saying “Can we don’t ask so many questions! I need the equipment urgently for a meal presentation at 2.30pm!” Basically the email sounded very angry, directed at me. And he copied in the bosses.

I called the production manager after talking to the cleaner manager, to ask about the situation. He insisted that I go to the kitchen and have a look at the machine with him. At the same time during the phone call, he sent a reply to the chef’s email and listed down the timings. His reply was ended off with:

“By the way, I have already asked Chef XX to clean up the equipment. We can’t afford to delay our schedule just because we can’t have such a simple job done with proper monitoring.”

Talk about sarcasm.

Fine. I went to the kitchen to meet this freaking bastard (FB), brought the cleaner manager to see him to talk about the cleaning arrangements.

After that meeting, I asked my colleague and the cleaner manager to leave first. I went to this FB’s cubicle and told him straight to the point.

“I don’t understand why my simple question needed such bombardment from chef and a sarcastic email from you.”

He said that I must think from production’s perspective, can’t delay schedule blah blah blah. But the actual fact was that the machine was new and no one has inform QA or the cleaners that it was in use already. The cleaning training session for this new machine has not even finished.

“I am not asking for your explanation. I am trying to tell you that I don’t think it’s fair for me to get the email bombarded by chef and a sarcastic email from you.”

Guess what his reply was.

“Why not?”

At that moment I knew that he belonged to the second category and this FB is freakingly hopeless.

I repeated, “Why not? Ok thank you.” and walked out of his cubicle, out of the production office.

My own department didn't give me a good time too. To be exact, my ex-boss didn't.

On my second last working day, she told me in the morning that she wanted me to go with her for a supplier audit that afternoon. I was thinking, ok, so I would have to finish the report on my last day of work.

My initial plan was to wrap up whatever work I had to handover in the morning on my last day, and swing by the offices in the 2 centres after lunch to bid farewell, come back to office and send out my farewell email, leave on the dot.

Fine, I could cut the farewell part short in the afternoon to finish up the report.

At the supplier’s factory, she told me she needed me to go for another one on the next day. I checked with purchasing on the details and got to know that we had to go Malaysia.
“Boss, she said we need to go both the SG and Msia plant.”
“OK.”
“I think it’ll take the whole day.”
“OK, is there any reason you can’t go tomorrow?”

At that moment I knew that she forgot when my last day was. I had applied leave for my last official day when I tendered my resignation some weeks ago.

Fine, since you can’t remember your own staff’s last day, and I don’t think I want to remind you, so I went for the audit. And somehow you didn’t want the new colleagues to learn how to do it, that’s not my problem.

Left office at 9am on my last day, and only reached office at 4.15pm. What farewell? One group of my staff has already gone home. So I decided to call over to the other centre to this group that used to report to me, then went to surrender my passes to HR. The other group of staff at this centre was still around, but I only managed to say goodbye to 2 of them.

I decided that I shall not OT on my last day, so I packed up everything on my desk, including the documents necessary for the reports, and left office 30 minutes late. That night I sent out email to my boss and my replacement on some handover issues, and sent out my farewell email at 8.30pm. The only person whom I didn’t send to was FB, as expected. Being extremely nice, I decided to include the VP and the head chef because their actions were nothing compared to FB.

The next day, I compiled all the reports and sent them to my ex-boss. She called me in late morning. As expected, she said she forgot my last day was the day before.

I already planned that if she was going to say “You should have reminded me your last day was yesterday!”, I would tell her straight that I don’t think a leaving staff should remind his/her boss when his/her last day is.

She just said something like she wouldn’t have sent me there if she remembered it was my last day, and some other stuff that were too trivial and no-substance for me to remember.

Whatever. I can't be bothered with this freaking place anymore.

By the way, before I left the company, another lady left the week before me, one leaving one day after me and another 2 more have tendered. After I left, I heard that 2 more tendered. Heard that in the company resignations happen in waves.

What a nice place. People can't wait to get out of here to let other people have a chace to enjoy.

More on the new company another day.

Further Studies

MBA Nanyang + MBA Waseda in Management of Technology.
2 trimesters in Singapore, 1 trimester in Japan.

A very big bait indeed.

I'm seriously considering going for this. Well, maybe when I've worked for about 2 years in my new job which is starting in 2 weeks. They encourage people with 3-5 years work experience to join anyway. I'm slightly below 3.

Went for the seminar last week. "You'll get an MBA issued by a Japanese University, so it would be beneficial if you are looking for a job in a Japanese company or even in Japan".

That's it man. Go.

$55000 for the whole year. I need a loan or if I'm lucky enough, a scholarship.

Provided I passed the application and interview, that is. And I need GMAT too.

My friend couldn't believe that I have never been to Japan. She said nobody would believe if I told them.

I can't believe it myself either.

What's been pulling me back??? There are 46 or 47 prefectures waiting for me to visit them!
I just want to go to 2-3 prefecture at a time, find hostels, or better still, homestay families. I'll walk down the streets everyday with my camera, feeling the culture and Japanese air. Alone.

Ahh. The thought is enough to make me sigh when I compare it to my daily life now.

I must win

After the series of happenings as stated in my last post, some updates.

On Tues I told my boss I need to discuss my last day with her. Apparently she didn't see my email to her on the previous Friday, or so she claimed. She said "You almost gave me a heart attack!"

What's so shocking when I've already told you 2 months ago that I want to resign?!?!?!?!? Seems like she REALLY doesn't think that I'll quit.

Somemore she went on and said that she couldn't have missed my email because "all the emails from you I treat as high importance".

Pui. This is not the first time she didn't see a mail that I've sent to her.

I didn't say that I've already signed the contract, and she actually asked me to stay for another year. Crazy. Stay for another year do saikang, postman, nothing related to the profession, for what, may I ask?

And then said that she already submitted my name for the Korean thingy next year. That's not my problem. All boils down to you not taking me seriously when I said I want to resign in 2 months ago and you rejecting my letter.

Then she said that my promotion in Jan went through already. Mind you, it's not "promotion". It's "upgrading". In order to get "promotion", I need to skip 2 grades to which I don't think other bosses would agree. For what? I'll still be an "executive".

I said I told the company I'll start on 1 Mar. She asked me to start on 1 Apr. Which means I'll be giving full 3 months' notice.

"Not that I don't want to keep my promise, but you have to understand that this is a critical period."

Critical? And may I know who's the one who introduced this critical-ness?

My colleague's last day is next week. And 2 months ago she chose to hire this lady who can only join on 1 Mar. I'm sure there are loads of other candidates out there who could start early to do a proper handover and all. And she must choose this one who won't be meeting my colleague at all.

Unless she purposely didn't want them to meet. I won't be surprised. She got lots of plans and reasons to do things that most of us can't understand anyway.

So I try to be nice and said I'll ask my new company if I can start a month later. Which made me very very dl because it means that I'll be giving 5 FULL MONTHS of notice.

"You need to trust me on this ok? May I know what company are you joining?"

When people start the topic with "trust me", it usually has the opposite effect on me.

Who knows what she would do if she knew? Go and talk to the company about me? Ask them not to take me yet? No way. I already anticipated this question coming from her. Why would anyone tell their current boss where he/she is moving on to? Either she's trying her luck or she's too thick to realize this.

I only squeezed out that it's not a local company. She asked if they can match my current salary and I answered yes, that's all. Then she said it should be quite a good company if they can match my salary when I only have 2 years of experience. Yes you'll be surprised boss. I kept a lot of things to myself on this topic.

I have nicely agreed to ask my new company if I can start on 1 Apr instead. That was what I thought on the day itself.

The next day, Wed, she didn't come to office until 4+pm, once she reached office she sat down opposite me to talk.

Guess what. SHE FOUND SOMEONE TO REPLACE ME. And the person has agreed to start in Jan. In less than 48 hours after I told her I'm resigning.

You can analyse and infer a whole lot things from the series of actions.

So I'm just going to wait for the New Year to start, and I'm going to sit down and analyse LOGICALLY with her, that you don't freaking need such a long handover period if the girl is going to start in Jan.

Seriously, what I'm doing now, is not so complicated that you need 2+ months to handover. At most 2 weeks will do. I didn't have any proper handover when I joined, and I'll still surviving. Somemore that girl is from our subsidiary. That's half the problems solved.

So I'm going to stick to my original date. Plus I still have about 16 days of leave to clear. Need to print out a calendar and list down which dates I want to take.

I'll bet you anything either she ask me to push back my last day to be somewhere mid Mar and clear everything at one go at the end so my last day is 29 Feb, or she'll buy the leave.

Unless she suddenly kai qiao and understand my logic.

Need to settle this real quick because I need to inform my dear uncles before the news go one big round in the company and finally comes back and reaches them. Not very nice. And the new girl is coming in in 2 weeks' time.

I can finally start my count down.

Happening

This is quite a happening week.

Last week I got a call from a job agent who found me on monster about a job opening that does similar things as I'm doing right now.

Under her persuasion I went for the job interview.

And I got a call yesterday that I got the job. And I need to reply them asap if I'm going to take it.

In the first place I wasn't like "Yes I NEED the job".

Same field, at Woodlands.
But boss not in SG, nobody report to me, independent.
Oh, and higher pay.

The thing is that the push factor at my current place is way too huge to handle without going crazy once in a while.

I am more or less ready to sign the new contract, but last day is a very tricky issue that I need to discuss with my boss. I can only do that next Tues.

Monday I was on leave.

Tuesday I went for wisdom tooth extraction, took out 2 very black big teeth with 2 big holes in my mouth now. The bottom one required cutting and stitching, and I'm freaking myself out everytime I feel the thread hanging there. It's either the end of the thread, or the thread somehow got detached, or the flesh it was holding onto got detached.... But in return I got 4 days MC till Friday. The dentist wanted to give me Saturday as well.

Today I went for Lasik assessment at Shinagawa. Both eyes got astigmatism 50deg now. But fortunately my cornea is slightly thicker than average, so eye condition is good for the surgery. I nearly fainted again on my way to Orchard. When I felt the familiar sensation I rushed out of the train to sit at the bench on the platform. Snowflake vision, immense cold sweat, immense stomachache, and aches at weird places like back and back of neck. 15 minutes later when my vision was better, I rushed downstairs to the toilet outside the station. another 20 minutes till everything went off. Drenched in cold sweat by then.

Tomorrow is the op day.
If everything goes smoothly, 22 Dec 2011 marks my last day of wearing spectacles after 16 long years.
And 16 Dec 2011 marks my last day of wearing contact lenses after 11 long years.

Friday I'll have to go back again for post-op check up.

Saturday is xmas eve, I'll either be going for my work batch's gathering or uni classmate gathering dinner.

Sunday will be xmas buffet dinner.

Monday there's a cat adoption drive at Punggol, I really just want to pop by and see, but the place seems to be quite ulu...
Tuesday I'll need to go to the dentist to remove the stitching before going to work. And then at work I need to talk to my boss about my last day.

Happening 2011 year end.
